The fantasy fairy tale Nettle & Bone follows the misadventures of Marra, a failed princess living in a convent. Although she feels grossly underqualified, Marra is determined to save her surviving sister from her abusive husband, a homicidal prince of the powerful Northern Kingdom. |
We meet Marra in a charnel pit using wire to construct a dog of bones. This is the second impossible task she’s been given by a graveyard hag--the first being to weave a cloak of prickly nettles in one day.
Marra next journeys to the Goblin Market, where she meets a disgraced ex-knight who was captured after sleeping on a fairy mound. Her own fairy godmother becomes her third ally in her quest to kill the evil handsome prince.
The strong empathy I felt for Marra reminded me of reading The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. In both books, I was completely invested in a main character with tremendous heart but no practical political power struggling to overcome impossible odds.
Nettle & Bone is full of surprises, humor, suspense--and romance. The characters are endearing and quirky. The plot is full of twists and turns yet feels inevitable.
